UNIORG successfully completes SAP software conversion at Atlas Copco in the United States

Dortmund, Germany – December 2, 2010 -- After Atlas Copco Gas and Process purchased the American manufacturing company Mafi-Trench Company LLC in 2007, it became necessary to harmonize the software system landscape and corresponding processes in order to efficiently conduct business and manage engineering projects at multiple locations. Atlas Copco was already in the process of conducting a company-wide software implementation, and the next logical step was to integrate Mafi-Trench Company, located in Santa Maria, California.

The SAP business management software application modules were selected and the rollout was based on an existing and sector specified SAP templates. The new SAP system (Release SAP ERP 6.0) replaced three different software solutions being used at Mafi-Trench Company for financial management, purchasing and manufacturing. The template roll-out was managed by the staff of Dortmund-based SAP-Full Service provider UNIORG. The UNIORG team has implemented multiple successful international rollouts and has been involved significantly in the development of the template for the Atlas Copco Gas and Process Division.

“This project was not simply the introduction of new software, but a complete reengineering of the processes with the associated change or adjustment of internal activities and functions” commented James T. Reilly, General Manager of Atlas Copco Mafi-Trench Company LLC. “The key success factor for the complex SAP implementation in our company was the close and very efficient cooperation between Atlas Copco staff and the UNIORG SAP experts.”

A major challenge during the conversion was the transfer of existing data into the SAP system. The data had been distributed redundantly across three separate software systems. In addition, the saved information was insufficient and did not meet the requirements of the SAP system for parts lists, material masters, supplier data, and customer information. Before the start of the project a detailed analysis was conducted and indicated critical points of the project. This ensured that all involved were well prepared and able to focus on these projects.

“Another test for us was the geographical distance and the time difference which required very intensive coordination processes,” commented Oliver Rix, UNIORG project manager. “Thanks to the excellent cooperation between UNIORG, Mafi-Trench and Atlas Copco, the three agreed project phases in the U.S., including several tests, were sufficient to successfully complete the project in seven months.”
